Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment Workshop – 6th & 7th September 2018

in collaboration with….

“There is a four-fold difference in the speed of learning between the most effective and the least effective classrooms.
The obvious factors – class size, the between-class grouping strategy, the within-class grouping strategy – make relatively little difference.  What matters is the quality of the teacher.”

As part of the St. Paul’s 50th anniversary celebrations the school is honoured to be welcoming the world-renowned education expert Dylan Wiliam.
Dylan Wiliam, PHD, is an internationally recognised authority in the development of effective, research-based formative assessment and his ideas have had a profound effect on teacher practice and student learning worldwide. His books, articles and face-to-face training – in countries like the United States, Singapore, Australia, and the United Kingdom – have helped thousands of schools to successfully implement formative assessment in the classroom.
Now for the first time ever Dylan will be presenting to educators here in Spain.
We are delighted to be able to offer a limited number of places at this unique two day event designed for school leaders, coordinators, heads of department and teachers.
We hope you can join us!

PROGRAMME

Day 1 Embedding Formative Assessment
Research continues to show that formative assessment strategies are one of the most effective methods for improving student learning. When implemented properly, they empower students, significantly increase engagement, and shift classroom responsibility from teachers to their students so that the students themselves are required to play a far more active role in their learning journeys. Yet for all of its benefits, formative assessment – or assessment for learning as it is sometimes called – is not a simple, quick-fix that can be easily be implemented by schools. It does instead require a fundamental shift in attitudes by both school leaders and teachers along with careful, considered and research-based training and implementation.

Day 2 Assessment Design and Assessment Literacy
Assessment is a good servant but a bad master. This is why a school’s assessment system has to be individually designed to assess its curriculum rather than the other way around. In order to design, implement and embed an effective assessment system all users need to have a certain degree of assessment literacy— an understanding of both the meanings and the consequences of educational assessments. Participants will learn what makes some assessments better than others, why student progress measures are almost entirely useless, why most tests will never produce useful diagnostic information on students, and why most school assessment systems do not do the things they are intended to do.
